چکیده

We present the results of a systematic analysis of the intrinsic optical afterglow light curves for a complete sample of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed in the period from 1997 February to 2005 August. These light curves are generally well sampled, with at least four detections in the R band. The redshifts of all the bursts in the sample are available. We derive the intrinsic R-band afterglow light curves (luminosity vs. time within the cosmic proper rest frame) for these GRBs and discover that they essentially follow two universal tracks beyond 2 hours after the GRBs triggered. The optical luminosities at 1 day show a clear bimodal distribution, peaking at 1.4#10 ergs s 1 for the luminous group and 5.3#10 ergs s 1 for the dim group. About 75% of the GRBs are in the luminous group, and the other 25% belong to the dim group. While the luminous group has a widely distributed range of redshifts, the bursts in the dim group all appear at redshifts lower than 1.1. Identification of two categories of optically bright γ-ray bursts with universal optical afterglows

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be the brightest electromagnetic explosions in the universe after the identification of their cosmic origin. These erratic, transient events in γ-rays are followed by long-lived, decaying afterglows in longer wavelengths. It has been well known that without correction for the jet beaming effect, the isotropic γ-ray luminosities vary for 4 orders of magnit...

Optical Classification of Gamma-ray Bursts in the Swift Era

We propose a new method for the classification of optically dark gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), based on the X-ray and optical-to-X-ray spectral indices of GRB afterglows, and utilizing the spectral capabilities of Swift. This method depends less on model assumptions than previous methods, and can be used as a quick diagnostic tool to identify optically sub-luminous bursts. With this method we can al...

The early X-ray afterglows of optically bright and dark Gamma-Ray Bursts

A systematical study on the early X-ray afterglows of both optically bright and dark gamma-ray bursts (B-GRBs and D-GRBs) observed by Swift has been presented. Our sample includes 25 GRBs. Among them 13 are B-GRBs and 12 are D-GRBs. Our results show that the distributions of the X-ray afterglow fluxes (FX), the gamma-ray fluxes (Sγ), and the ratio (Rγ,X) for both the D-GRBs and B-GRBs are simil...

Swift Identification of Dark Gamma-ray Bursts

We present an optical flux vs. X-ray flux diagram for all known gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) for which an X-ray afterglow has been detected. We propose an operational definition of dark bursts as those bursts that are optically subluminous with respect to the fireball model, i.e., which have an optical-to-X-ray spectral index βOX < 0.5. Out of a sample of 52 GRBs we identify 5 dark bursts. The defin...
